Each team has five runners (forwards, transition players and defensemen) and a goaltender on the floor during the game. Each team dresses 18 players (16 runners and two goaltenders) per game, and the players rotate on and off the floor in shifts, similar to  ice hockey. The game consists of four quarters, each fifteen minutes in length. A game that is tied at the end of regulation is decided in a sudden-death overtime. There are no tie games in professional indoor lacrosse and teams combine to score an average of 25 goals per game.

New York is home to 3 professional teams, 66 colleges teams and numerous High School competitions.

Lacrosse Basics

Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. Players use the head of the lacrosse stick (which has a small woven basket) to carry, pass, catch, and shoot the ball into an opponent’s goal.  The game is played on a rectangular field. The objective is to throw your team’s ball into the opponent’s goal as many times as possible during a set time period.  The team with the most goals at the end of play wins.

The men's outdoor field lacrosse and indoor lacrosse are contact sports.   All players wear protective gear: helmet, gloves, shoulder pads, and elbow pads.   Indoor lacrosse is generally played in ice hockey arenas.  Outdoor lacrosse is generally played on football and soccer fields that have been modified to accommodate lacrosse dimensions.

The women's game does not allow body contact but does allow stick to stick contact. The only protective gear required for women players is protective goggles, while goalies wear helmets and protective pads.
